Adult Family Homes (AFH) are licensed by the state (DSHS in Washington) to give personalized care for a maximum of 6 to 8 residents. They are licensed and designed to provide the highest level of care in a residential setting.
Residential homes, licensed for up to six residents, provide varying levels of care. Some are operated by nurses, specializing in dementia and Alzheimer's care. All homes must have a current assessment and care plan reflecting the resident's needs and preferences. Owners and staff undergo significant training and are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education annually.
Over 4500 adult family homes exist in Puget Sound. They can be divided into two categories: renovated homes and specially built homes. The latter are usually more spacious and have private bathrooms, social areas, and activity rooms.
